Be well chiropractor: A word on the future of the chiropractor profession.
What’s the future for chiropracters?
Are they going the way of the physical therapist?
What’s next for chiropractor education?
We asked some of the profession’s top experts and asked them what they hope to see in the future.
Dr. William Schick of Boston’s Boston Medical Center said, “The world is getting bigger.
We have a population that is growing at double digits.
We need to take care of them.
We’re not going to do that if we don’t have a better understanding of the body.”
Dr. Gary Smith of the Mayo Clinic echoed this sentiment, saying, “People want a little bit of care.
They want to feel like they’re doing something.”
Kevin Kelly of Yale University and Andrew Pfeffer of the University of Michigan said they are working to bring back a chiropractive model that helps to balance physical activity with healing.
They said the model would be more about the patient, rather than a therapist, and would be less about the need for medical supervision.
Drs Kelly and Pfefer both emphasized that chiropracting is not the same as chiropractomy.
Dr. Kelly said the chiropractor’s goal is not to remove the symptoms, but rather to “help you get better.”
“The goal of chiropractor is not about removing the symptoms but rather about getting you to heal.
If you can do that, you’ll be better,” he said.
Dr Pfeerer said that if there was ever a chiropractor who was truly passionate about helping his patients, it was Dr. Pfeer.
“He has a passion for this profession,” he told us.
“There’s a difference between being a good doctor and a good chiropractor.”
Dr Schick said that chiropractor training needs to be better.
He said, “[The] thing that needs to change is the amount of time you spend doing it.
There are so many things that can go wrong.
We don’t spend enough time teaching students how to treat patients properly.
That’s what I want to do, is give them more time.”
What does it mean for the future?
Dr. Schick, who said that he’s not going back to the physical therapy profession, said, I’m going to make sure that I’m doing a good job.
“The future of medical care is still a long way off.
Dr Kelly said that there is no shortage of healthcare professionals, and that there will be more.
Dr Pfeerr echoed this, saying that there are a lot of medical doctors who are going to retire, but there will also be medical students who will continue to train.
